Drew Myers Speaks on Setting Goals & Living Life to the Fullest

Last Thursday and Friday, Leadership Perryton* had Drew Myers, President and CEO of Fort Worth-based e-Partners in Giving, as its featured speaker.

At Thursday evening’s event, “The List: 101 Tasks, 1,001 Days,” Drew talked about and encouraged creating a list of activities (101, to be exact) to complete in approximately 2.7 years.

Unlike a bucket list—or list of things to do before you die—this list is about enjoying life to the fullest—right now. At the end of the 1001 days, you can create a new list, complete with actions you didn’t do from your first list.

Sharing stories about his own list, he talked about the impact it has had on his life and offered tips for creating your own list. To help you get the most out of life (and your list), Drew encouraged following the guidelines below.

  • Your tasks should be specific, with no ambiguity in the wording.
  • Results should be clearly defined and measurable.
  • Tasks should be realistic while still requiring some amount of effort to accomplish. (Chances are you aren’t going to be able to check off “Walk on the moon” as a completed task, but on the flip side, including “Watch every airing of the next season’s ‘American Idol’” is missing the point.)

Drew also said to consider the following points:

  • What is something you’ve always wanted to do? Include it on your list.
  • Keep it simple and don’t forget the small pleasures in life.
  • Include at least five or six things that take the focus off you. Never stop giving back; even if you can’t give money, you can always give time.
  • Keeping money in mind, figure out how much it will cost to complete your tasks.
  • Understand that the greatest impact isn’t from actually accomplishing the tasks. It’s realizing how blessed you are and thanking God for the opportunities.

Drew’s talk on Friday centered on the topic “Are we chasing the imaginary?” He focused on setting goals and achieving balance in your life. As he said during his presentation, “Do not let life happen on accident. Live life on purpose! Create a game plan and get started.”
